Car Hire Milan | Lombardy from €17/day

Car Hire Milan — Fashion Capital Meets Alpine Gateway

Milan is Italy’s economic engine — a city of finance, fashion, and design. The Duomo, La Scala, and Da Vinci’s Last Supper are the highlights, but beyond the city, Lombardy offers lakes, mountains, and food that rival anywhere in Italy. Lake Como, Lake Garda, and the Alps are within 1-2 hours of the city centre. A rental car here transforms Milan from a city break into a base for exploring northern Italy’s most beautiful regions.

Driving in central Milan is not recommended. The Area C congestion charge and ZTL zones make it expensive, and parking is limited. But for regional travel — Lake Como, Bergamo, the Alps, or heading south to Emilia-Romagna — a rental car is essential. The A1, A4, and A8 motorways converge here, connecting Milan to all of Italy.

Picking Up Your Rental Car in Milan

City pickup locations are near Milano Centrale station (the main hub) and in the Porta Nuova business district. Most offices open Monday through Saturday, 8 AM to 6 PM, with limited Sunday hours. Milan Linate (LIN) and Malpensa (MXP) airports offer longer hours — consider airport pickup for weekend arrivals. Parking in central Milan is expensive. Use garages (€20-30/day) or park outside the centre and use public transport.

Documentation: valid driving licence (International Driving Permit recommended for non-EU licences), passport or ID card, and credit card for deposit (€500-1,500). Italian rental companies inspect vehicles carefully. Photograph your car before driving off.

Where to Go with Your Rental Car in Milan

Lake Como (1 hour) — North on the A8 and A9. Como, Bellagio, and Varenna offer stunning lake views, villas, and gardens. Parking can be tight in popular towns — arrive early.

Bergamo (1 hour) — East on the A4. The Città Alta (upper town) is a stunning medieval walled city. Don’t miss the funicular ride up.

Lake Garda (1.5 hours) — East on the A4. Sirmione, Desenzano, and Riva del Garda offer beaches, castles, and water sports. Popular in summer.

Turin (1.5 hours) — West on the A4. The Egyptian Museum, Mole Antonelliana, and excellent cuisine. An elegant city often overlooked by tourists.

Bologna and Emilia-Romagna (2 hours) — Southeast on the A1. Bologna’s food scene is legendary. Parma and Modena are nearby.

Tips for Driving in Italy

Milan connects to the A1 (south to Bologna, Florence, Rome), A4 (east to Bergamo, Verona, Venice), A7 (south to Genoa), and A8/A9 (north to Como and Switzerland). Speed limits are 50 km/h in cities, 90 km/h on rural roads, and 130 km/h on motorways (110 km/h in rain). Italian drivers are aggressive — expect tailgating and fast lane changes.

Italian motorways are toll roads. Expect €15-30 for medium journeys. Credit cards are accepted. Fuel is cheaper at supermarkets (Coop, Esselunga) than on autostrade.

Milan has Area C (congestion charge) and ZTL zones in the centre. Do NOT drive into the centre without paying. Cameras are automatic. Rental companies will pass fines to you.

Use the search above to compare Milan car hire prices. Whether you’re heading to the lakes or the Alps, a rental car gives you freedom to discover Lombardy.
