Car Hire Faro — Explore the Algarve Your Way

Faro is the Algarve’s capital, but most travellers treat it as a blur-through destination—fly in, grab a car, head west to Lagos or Albufeira. That’s a shame, because Faro’s old town has genuine charm, and its location makes it the perfect base for exploring both the western Algarve’s dramatic coastline and the eastern wetlands that most tourists never see.

With a rental car, the entire Algarve opens up. You’re 30 minutes from the cliff-backed beaches of the west, 45 minutes from the Spanish border, and an hour from the mountains of Monchique. The distances are small, the roads are good, and the variety of landscapes packed into 150 kilometres of coast is remarkable.

Picking Up Your Rental Car in Faro

Faro Airport (Algarve Airport) is small and efficient, located just 4 kilometres from the city centre. All rental desks are in the terminal—no shuttles needed. The major operators (Avis, Hertz, Europcar, Sixt, Budget) share space with budget-friendly Portuguese companies (Guerin, Turisprime, Goldcar).

Summer queues can be long. July and August see constant arrivals from the UK, Germany, and the Netherlands. Book ahead—at least 2-3 weeks for peak season. Prices start around €10/day in low season but can triple in August.

City centre pickup is available if you’re already in Faro, but airport is more convenient. The access roads connect directly to the A-22 motorway and the N-125 coastal road, both of which run the length of the Algarve.

Where to Go with Your Rental Car from Faro

Lagos (1 hour west): Stunning rock formations at Ponta da Piedade, beautiful beaches, and a charming old town. One of the Algarve’s must-visit spots.

Sagres (1.5 hours west): Wild, windswept coastline at Europe’s southwestern edge. The lighthouse and dramatic cliffs feel like the end of the world—in a good way.

Tavira (30 minutes east): Arguably the Algarve’s most beautiful town, with a Roman bridge, a castle, and access to the beaches of the Ria Formosa. Much calmer than the western resorts.

Ria Formosa Natural Park (20 minutes): Wetlands stretching from Faro to Cacela, perfect for birdwatching and boat trips. Stop at Olhão for seafood restaurants and ferry access to the barrier islands.

Monchique Mountains (45 minutes): Inland retreat with thermal springs, forest walks, and panoramic views from Foia, the Algarve’s highest point.

Tips for Driving in the Algarve

The A-22 motorway (Via do Infante) runs from Lagos to the Spanish border. It’s mostly toll-free now—good news for drivers. The N-125 coastal road is free but slower, especially through towns in summer.

Speed limits: 120km/h on motorways, 90km/h on open roads, 50km/h in towns. Portuguese drivers in the Algarve are used to tourists—they’re generally patient but stay right unless overtaking.

Parking in tourist towns: underground lots are your friend. In Lagos and Albufeira, they’re the only stress-free option in July and August. Blue zones require payment; white zones are free. Never park in residents’ spots (gray markings).

Fuel stations are plentiful. The ones near the airport charge premium prices—fill up at a supermarket station before returning. Diesel (gasóleo) is widely available.
